DUCFS Formal Application

Dear DUCFS Exec,

On this post I would like to expand my application further and highlight some of my strengths which I believe are relevant for the roles.

The 3 roles which I would like to apply for are:

  1. VP Creative
  2. Fashion Director (womenswear or menswear)
  3. Head of Marketing

My creative flair and passion for fashion – I have always had an interest in fashion, studying my subscriptions to Tatler and Vogue since I was a young teenager. Now that I am at University I have been able to dedicate some time towards this passion of mine. This has been evident in my involvement in the 2019 Durham University Charity Fashion Show, which you ran in aid of the Environmental Justice Foundation. Although a small role, acting as one of your Events Representatives this year gave me insight into DUCFS and made me even more keen to apply this year. Helping at the door at Loft, promoting DUCFS on social media and coordinating with other Events Reps helped me understand the commitment and hard work which goes into DUCFS and that is something which I am eager to continue in the 2020 DUCFS. This year I have also got involved in the Walk On Charity Fashion Show. Volunteering to dedicate my time to find sponsors around Durham for the auction and for the show in general illustrated my willingness to work in a team and approach local businesses. The skills that I learnt through my involvement at both of these fashion shows this year are translatable and essential to the roles which I am applying for. Furthermore, hopefully this website has demonstrated my creative flair and interest in fashion, especially the rise of fashion with technology in the digital age we live in (which is my proposed theme for DUCFS 2020). Finally, I have been proactive in applying to internships this summer and I am hoping to spend a week with luxury accessory brand ‘Charlotte Simone’ to gain more experience in the industry as it is a career path which I would like to take in the foreseeable future. Having a role in DUCFS 2020 would be a wonderful experience to strengthen my CV for future fashion jobs.

Team player – I am a very competitive sports person – a regular first team player at School and now currently at both College and University level in Durham in a number of sports, including netball, tennis and hockey. Such a drive to want to constantly improve and be the best, whilst also working and coordinating with a team, I believe is a crucial skill for this role. I am hoping to develop my teamwork, leadership and social skills when working at Wimbledon this July for the Food and Drink department.

Trusted individual – I have held positions of responsibility for a number of years – at School I was a Pastoral Prefect and was required to look after a group of around twenty young children. Furthermore, I was President of my School Ball committee which involved leading a team of 15 others and leading meetings throughout the year. My role included coordinating an event for just under 200 students and teachers, contacting caterers, the venue and entertainment companies for the event. Furthermore, during my penultimate year at School I helped establish the ‘Missing Maps’ society – an NGO which helps put places under threat from conflict or natural disasters onto maps, making it easier for those places to receive aid.  This demonstrated my willingness to take time after school to run the society and help pupils understand the technology involved in mapping. I believe that such a drive to go beyond my work and get involved in extra-curricular activities is essential for commitment to any DUCFS role.

Marketing experience – I have had a week of work experience with a marketing and customer science company based in London, Dunnhumby. I was given an overview in to the way data drives decisions in the modern retail environment and how the company uses this data for marketing strategy. I spent time in both the creative and analytical areas of the business, choosing to focus on the changing trends in one area of retail, specifically the tea sector. The week culminated in a presentation on the insights gained having analysed these trends. Such experience in the marketing sector would be beneficial to the role of Head of Marketing at DUCFS 2020 as I could use the skills learnt at Dunnhumby to help develop a clear branding calendar and come up with innovative ways of marketing the event.

Thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing back from you soon.
